Gregory VII

Gregory VII
Reformist pope (q.v.) from 1073-1085 whose vision of the papacy (q.v.) included a great army to save Byzantium from the Seljuks (qq.v.) ; this vision was later realized by Urban II (q.v.) in the First Crusade (q.v.). Gregory VII's vision of a union of the churches (q.v.) following from such a venture did not happen until the disastrous and tragic Fourth Crusade (q.v.).
